Fashion designers are gifted artists who work in the three-dimensional, ever-changing world of designing clothes. Fashion designers study trends in design, particularly, of course, clothing design. They then must create their designs for clothes that won’t be in the stores for two more years. Fashion designers not only are experts at color and style. They must also consider fabrics, the limits of anatomy, and certain practicalities of everyday life in designing clothes. Fashion designers also work closely with the manufacturers to ensure the clothes are done correctly.
Average Salary:
$61,000 for full-time workers. The average for freelance designers is less.
Average Hours (per week):
The standard 40-hour week is typical for salaried designers. Freelance designers need to be flexible and meet often after hours, or whenever the clients can meet. Several trips to trade and fashion shows are also required.
Union:
Not usually for the level of designer, though the clothing industry has many affiliated unions.
Certifications:
A portfolio of your best drawings speaks for itself. Skills in sewing and patternmaking are important. CAD certifications can be had, but are not as important as proof of creativity and know-how.
Training Period:
A college degree, either an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in fashion design, is required. Emphasis on, or even a minor in, business, marketing, merchandising is a good idea. Courses in anatomy, math and psychology are also a good idea. Internships with a design or manufacturing firm a good way of developing a portfolio, understanding the business, and making connections. Also, experience working in retail stores is helpful, especially in developing presentation and sales skills.
Beginners start as pattern makers or assistants.
Strongest Market(s):
New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco are the best markets. This is where apparel manufacturers or merchant wholesalers are. Design firms selling to mass-market outlets are there, too.
Entry Level Salary:
$30,000 is the entry-level salary, if you’re lucky. The competition to break in to the industry is fierce, requiring entry-level designers to work for what they can get.
Top Salary:
$125,000 is the top salary for a fashion designer who works in a company. Freelance fashion designers can possibly make any amount of money if their designs catch on.
Job Growth Forecast:
The official forecast for job growth for fashion designers is only five percent over the next ten years, and the competition for those jobs, because of the prestige and glamour of the fashion industry, is fierce.
