The director of web content establishes and directs the strategic long-term objectives, policies, and procedures for an organization’s web content. Generally this position handles higher level liaison issues, supervising web content staff and ensuring that the site is in alignment with the branding guidelines and content strategy.
The director of web content sets the direction for composition and development of written and graphical content for websites, meeting company objectives, such as providing information on products and services or entertaining site visitors. He/She determines the long-term systems needs and hardware acquisitions to accomplish the business objectives of the organization.
He/she will be well versed in trends and activities in order to develop guidelines that will increase a website’s presence and improve design and usability. These skills will be used to develop user interface and design standards, including feature improvements to attract visitors to the website. In order to ensure that site content is accurate, the position will require collaboration with other departments, such as marketing and engineering.
This position will require technical understanding of web usability and design protocols and will be responsible for maintaining the content database on technical specifications and compatibility issues. Advanced knowledge of HTML and experience with popular content management systems and web analytics tools, as well as basic skills with Adobe Photoshop will be a necessity.
The director of web content may also work closely with purchasing and marketing teams to make recommendations to increase sales and gross profit; may manage online strategic partnerships; find and review potential, new product suppliers; may develop and leverage relationships with online content vendors incorporating their products or services into the organization’s marketing programs and technology
Responsibilities:
- Manage content strategy, and possibly the user experience across the site.
- Responsible for content strategy and web user guides and guidelines.
- Supervise web content writers, designers, editors.
- Analyze use of the website to improve the design/layout.
- Collaborate with creative, video, and social media teams to ensure a robust and holistic experience.
- Collaborate with other departments regularly, offering suggestions and best practices for maintaining pages and distributing web analytics.
- Work with all web content team members to deliver an appropriate mix of high quality products, content and information to members.
- Track and measure web traffic and suggest improvements to product placement.
- Review current mix of products and services, and work to make improvements to specific products or delivery system.
