College Graduation Rate Sinks

College Graduation Rate Sinks

When over 60% of college students fail to graduate within six years of enrollment, something is wrong with the system. The main reason for the low graduation rate has nothing to do with academics and all to do with life. Simply put, more and more college students can’t afford the rising tuition costs, the escalating cost of living and the lack of gainful employment for the six or more years the average student takes to complete college.

These are frightening statistics. When 60% of college students actually end up heavily in debt and with no degree, the system is broken. Now more than ever, the high school graduate must take into consideration all of the higher education alternatives that are available to them.

What Schools Offer Career Help?

It seems pretty clear that the primary role of post high school education is to prepare you for a career in your chosen field of study. When the discussion turns to careers in the creative fields of media and arts, however, the role of the academic institution is less defined. Creative jobs get filled differently than most jobs. Take acting for instance: you show up for an audition (along with hundreds of other job candidates) and have less than five minutes to present your case. Your chances of success have everything to do with how well you fit the role that is being offered, and nothing to do with how book smart you are, or where you graduated in your class, and at the end of the day, only one person will be hired for the role. While maybe not as dramatic, other creative career opportunities follow a similar process—there are far more applicants than positions available and you need to nail your interview the first time out.

Get the Skinny on the Real Cost of Education

There are many things to consider when trying to calculate the true cost of an education; some obvious, some less so. First and foremost among educational expenses is the cost of tuition. On Schools For Me, we have chosen to display the complete tuition costs to graduate. In other words, if a school costs $10,000 per semester and requires eight semesters to graduate, then the tuition cost displayed on Schools For Me would be $80,000 ($10,000 x 8 semesters).

  • Tuition Costs Are Rising At Unprecedented Rates

    http://www.schoolsforme.net

The headline says it all.  Tuition costs have escalated to the point where students are demonstrating.  In fact, it's not unusual for a student to graduate from school hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

This makes it imperative to spend some time choosing the right school to help you achieve your goals.  Sadly, in this age of hyper-inflated tuition costs, a college degree does not guarantee a job, much less a career.

One strategy that is often overlooked when choosing a school is to talk to people who are successful in the career you want to pursue.  If you don't know anyone in your chosen field, you can often find much of this valuable information online.

The more entrepreneurial individual might go so far as to enroll in the "University of Hard Knocks" and just go for it.  The reasoning is simple: he can start his career behind the wheel of a Bentley, instead of owing his college what a Bentley costs by the time he graduates.

We're by no means advocating dropping out of school, or not pursuing an education.  However, we are advocating that you look before you leap.

  • MBA Pay: Riches for Some, Not All

Schools publish average salary figures that suggest most grads will reap rich rewards, but for many the "average" is a distant dream.

The MBA in the corner office, fresh out of business school with a six-figure paycheck, is a standard trope of Corporate America. Every incoming student has heard rags-to-riches tales of that gilded certification leading to giant paychecks and even bigger bonuses. But how often do these MBA fairy tales actually come true? According to new research: not as often as you think.Read more »
