Overview
Some might think of bartending more as a stepping-stone type of job rather than a career, but for some people, bartending is an art form. Good bartenders don’t just know the recipes for popular drinks and cocktails; they know how to blend the ingredients in perfect combinations with speed and skill. They are excellent multitaskers, sometimes able to mix several drinks at once while keeping their customers’ orders straight. Some bartenders are entertainers, too, delighting their guests with a blend of skill and humor while they work. What’s more–the best bartenders are caretakers, making their guests feel welcome, listening to their stories, knowing when they’ve had enough to drink, and sometimes arranging for rides home.
If you are a “people” person who enjoys showing hospitality; if you are creative and able to think on your feet; if you are someone who enjoys a sometimes challenging, fast-paced environment; if you can see yourself as an artist, and mixing drinks as an art to be perfected; then this might be more than just a job for you to do on your way to doing something else. Bartending might just be the career you’ve dreamed of.
