Market Research Analysts often work for research firms or universities – in both teaching positions and doing studies – in addition to working for advertising agencies. Advertising market Research analysts gather and analyze consumer data to help the advertising agency reach the right customers for the client’s services and products. The consumer data is information on exactly who the ideal customers are: their average income, their age, their ethnic basis, what media they watch or read, virtually anything and everything that helps the advertising agency “sell” to them. Analysts also gather and analyze the competition’s products and services and who their customers are. All of this information also helps the media department decide which media to put the ads in.

Analysts also “test” print ads and television commercials, showing them to those ideal customers to see what the customers think of the client’s message. They then use the customers’ responses to recommend changes to the advertising.

Analysts usually become heads of the research department of ad agencies, where they would supervise other analysts and researchers; develop the research questions; oversee the actual surveys; and ensure proper research analysis.
Average Salary: $59,000.
Average Hours (per week):

Analysts often work more than 40 hours per week, as problems arise in developing the research. Also, travel is often required as research samples are needed from around the country.
Union:

No.
Certifications:

The market research association has a program for professional researchers who want to demonstrate their expertise. Continuing education on current methods of developing, conducting and analyzing research data from surveys is important.
Training Period:

A college degree is necessary. Many analysts have advanced degrees. A strong ability with math and statistics is necessary as is an interest in marketing. Courses in social psychology, economics, statistics and marketing are a good basis. A few years as an assistant are helpful in understanding the variety of research available and honing analytical abilities to fit the marketplace’s demands.
Strongest Market(s):

Medium to large cities have the infrastructure, either in advertising or universities, to support market researchers.
Entry Level Salary:

$32,000
Top Salary:

$115,000
Job Growth Forecast:
The forecast over the next ten years is 20 percent, especially strong, as companies need a better understanding of new overseas markets and the global economy’s affect on them.
