Overview
The mentor-apprentice approach to learning is not a revolutionary concept in education. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. For centuries, mankind’s skills, trades, craftsmanship and artistry have been passed down in this manner, one person to another, mentor to apprentice. It has been the rule rather than the exception, especially in places and times when there were no schools to teach the skills. It is a method that is both inexpensive and proven to work, and when it comes to skills that are learned by doing, it is actually a more effective approach than traditional schooling.
Schools using the mentor-apprentice approach often don’t function out of a separate, centralized location where students go to study. Instead, they pair students with working professionals in the field, usually providing a curriculum as a roadmap. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in real working environments, being instructed by professionals who are actually doing the work with them—and relationships formed along the way help with job placement afterward. Best of all, since there is very little overhead and upkeep, it costs a whole lot less than traditional methods. Mentor-apprentice schools are a great way to get a solid education with a minimum amount of expense.
