Florida State University – Interior Design

DESCRIPTION

Our program, housed in the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance, encompasses a CIDA accredited undergraduate study and graduate studies for the First Professional and Post Professional student. The major has a long history at FSU, evolving in the 1940s from home planning and advanced furnishing courses, to a comprehensive program meeting the needs of our built environments for today and the future.

Studies in the elements and principles of design, the history, theory and philosophy, the sociological and psychological aspects of space and ethics and sound business practices provide the groundwork of all good interior design. They lead to in depth study of the technical, graphic, design process and studio techniques required to solve the design problems of today’s complex interiors. Good interior design is not a luxury but a necessity. It can help to protect the environment, natural and human resources, and make the world a better place in which to live, work, and play.

The Program is currently housed in the historic Eppes Hall and the Kellogg Research Building (with our main department office in 302 Eppes!) Aside from the department and faculty offices, our facilities consist of 4 design studios, a CAD Lab, Resource Room, a public critique space, student lounge, seminar and lecture spaces, and offices and congregation spaces for our graduate students. Construction is now underway for a $49.2 million renovation of the 1939 William Johnston Building, on Landis Green in the heart of the FSU campus. It will include new and renovated LEED certified space of over 130,000 sf. Construction is slated to be completed in Summer 2011. When we move in we will have state-of-the-art studios, lecture and technology areas, a 1000 sf gallery and a full woodworking shop.

The Department of Art offers diverse opportunities for creative development and expression, provides instruction in the skills necessary for artistic creation, and guides students to an understanding of contemporary issues in the visual arts in an academically challenging environment. The department is committed to excellence in all programs and strives to combine curricular flexibility and a rigorous mix of experiences with opportunities for serious, focused study in art and design. The department benefits from the Museum of Fine Arts (MOFA) for student and faculty exhibitions. Course selection encompasses history, theory, and practice. Studies may include ceramics, electronic media, design, drawing, installation, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Degree in Fashion Design offered by Cazenovia College prepares students to work in the fashion industry by developing the technical, creative, and knowledge-based skills they need to cultivate design ideas, create garments, and present their own fashion lines.

The Fashion Design major provides students with educational opportunities that will enable them to enter the professional world of fashion in a variety of areas, including design and manufacturing. Through studio and traditional courses, internships, and the use of state-of-the-art software, the graduate in fashion design is prepared to enter the competitive world of fashion or graduate school.

Upon completion of AFD 21200 and AFD 23000, each Fashion Design major will attend an individual advising session to review the strengths and weaknesses of the student’s skills. Upon completion of AFD 30900 and AFD 23500, each student will attend an individual portfolio review. This review will determine if the student will continue in the Fashion Design program or if they will be redirected based on their skills. The purpose of these advising sessions is to guide each student based on his or her individual strengths.

Each year culminates in a fashion exhibition entirely produced by students not only from the fashion program, but also from retail, theater, and art. Students who pursue a design program learn how to conceptualize and execute a project for a specific target audience. As students progress through the program, they create a body of work that demonstrates their creativity, analytical thinking, and expertise in graphic design techniques.

Students learn how to combine typography and images to create a wide variety of designs such as magazine and newspaper advertisements, television story boards, and product packaging and displays. They learn to use the elements of design to clearly communicate corporate image or personal identity. The success of their designs is dependent upon their mastery of the concepts of white space, color, headlines, copy blocks, photographs, original art, logotypes, borders and other typographic devices.

You know the end of your favorite film? The one you’ve watched a million times and always smile when they get to that special scene, that climactic scene, right at the end…? That one.

Where do you think it started? It started at the beginning of the film. The filmmakers crafted, built and brought you along on that journey which made the ending pay off that much more. They did the work.

Let’s look at the question again…is a degree worth getting when pursuing a career in media/arts?

Thinking about the question the same way you think about your favorite movie. Sure, you could wing it and hope that the audience gets it at the end. Or, you could put in the work, the sacrifice, at the beginning of the movie of your life, or your career, and guarantee that it pays off in the end.

They are serious questions. There are tons of good reasons to not get an education. But, how serious are you about your dream? Do I go for it now? Or do I get the education I need to do it properly? Do I just wing it, or do I earn the tools I need to enter the world of media/arts properly prepared to kick some alien ass?!
