Florida State University – Interior Design

School Website
Length to Graduate: 4 Years
Location: FL-Tallahassee
Students per Class: 11-20
Tuition to Graduate: $119,964
Subject: Interior Design

DESCRIPTION
Our program, housed in the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance, encompasses a CIDA accredited undergraduate study and graduate studies for the First Professional and Post Professional student. The major has a long history at FSU, evolving in the 1940s from home planning and advanced furnishing courses, to a comprehensive program meeting the needs of our built environments for today and the future.
Studies in the elements and principles of design, the history, theory and philosophy, the sociological and psychological aspects of space and ethics and sound business practices provide the groundwork of all good interior design. They lead to in depth study of the technical, graphic, design process and studio techniques required to solve the design problems of today’s complex interiors. Good interior design is not a luxury but a necessity. It can help to protect the environment, natural and human resources, and make the world a better place in which to live, work, and play.
ADVANTAGES
The Program is currently housed in the historic Eppes Hall and the Kellogg Research Building (with our main department office in 302 Eppes!) Aside from the department and faculty offices, our facilities consist of 4 design studios, a CAD Lab, Resource Room, a public critique space, student lounge, seminar and lecture spaces, and offices and congregation spaces for our graduate students. Construction is now underway for a $49.2 million renovation of the 1939 William Johnston Building, on Landis Green in the heart of the FSU campus. It will include new and renovated LEED certified space of over 130,000 sf. Construction is slated to be completed in Summer 2011. When we move in we will have state-of-the-art studios, lecture and technology areas, a 1000 sf gallery and a full woodworking shop.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
The department has a distinguished faculty of nine full-time members. These faculty are supplemented by adjunct faculty who are practicing professional interior designers, architects, and specialists in other areas and businesses related to interior design. All faculty members hold either a PhD or Master’s degree from major universities and have been chosen for their particular expertise in such areas as interior design, architecture, art and the technical and graphics aspects of design.
FINANCIAL AID
The traditional types of financial aid, which includes include grants, loans, and work-study are available.
SCHOLARSHIPS
All merit scholarships are awarded automatically based upon high school academic GPA and test performance, which we obtain from your application for admission.
CERTIFICATIONS
The Florida State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelors, masters, and doctor’s degrees.
SUMMARY
The Interior Design curriculum at Florida State is both demanding and rewarding and covers all areas of commercial and residential design. Design principles are applied to specific interiors including offices, restaurants, retail and hospitality venues, banks, healthcare facilities, as well as single and multi-family residences (including the special housing needs of the elderly and differently-abled.) Computer technology, and aspects of universal design and sustainability are spread throughout the course of study. The value we place on a global experience is underscored by a 22-year history of interior design focused summer abroad tours.
