Overview
If you think animators don’t get very far in the film business, think again. An entire family entertainment empire came from one guy who made a cartoon of a mouse named Mickey. Even today, companies like Pixar regularly get awards and acclaim for their remarkable animated stories. Animation is a lot more than just making cartoons; it’s telling captivating stories with pictures that move. If you’re artistically inclined and like the idea of having your drawings come to life, this might be just the career for you!
In studying animation, you’ll learn the latest techniques for creating eye-popping 2-D and 3-D animations, and you’ll learn about the state-of-the-art software that helps you create them. You’ll learn the secrets behind hand-drawn and painted animation and computer-generated animation. You’ll also learn something about story and plot, too, and how a good story line guides the movements of your characters so they aren’t just moving around aimlessly on the big screen. With a solid education in animation, you might just turn out to be the next Walt Disney.

The animation program encompasses character, non-character and experimental animation. Character animation fuses acting, performance and the principles of movement to create believable, genuine, emotive characters.
Character design, story structure and strong animation fundamentals are used by students to create a short, animated film project in their senior year. Fundamentals and the development of the “craft” of animation are stressed. Students may produce animations fusing both traditional and computer techniques. Non-character animation focuses on visual effects, abstract animation or the motion of inanimate objects. Students are encouraged to combine media to produce original, creative work and content.
