The Acting Program at FSU is an extremely competitive program designed to prepare highly talented students for work in professional theatre. F&M’s Film & Media Studies curriculum reflects the liberal arts orientation of the department and the college as a whole. It is our philosophy that smart and gifted young people who wish to pursue a career in film or the media are best served by a well-rounded education in the field, which includes challenging analytical courses in addition to a variety of practical courses.

We also make a point to open all of our courses to students from across the curriculum, since in today’s media saturated world, students in every discipline benefit from training in media analysis and production. F&M’s Film & Media Studies program opens these avenues of research to students across the curriculum. Franklin & Marshall’s newest 38,000 square foot performing arts center opened in the fall of 2003. As part of the Performing Arts Center, the Schnader Theater has seating for 305 that, while bigger in size than the previous main stage theater (the Green Room), maintains the intimate feel. With expanded handicapped access, convenient catwalks, state of the art technology, a pit that can fit a small orchestra, and a thrust stage that’s larger than two-thirds of all Broadway stages, the Schnader Theater is the perfect location for both professional and college productions.

The film, photography, and visual arts program differs from the B.S. program in cinema and photography by adding coursework in the other fine arts. Students may pursue either the Bachelor of Fine Arts in filmmaking, or the College Arts Diploma. The first two years of the curriculum stress fundamentals of the filmmaking process and visual storytelling. During the third and fourth years, students train within disciplines in a mentor/student relationship with professional faculty, staff and guest artists. As an acting major, you will move through a four-year sequence of progressively intensive training. During your third and fourth years, 75 percent of your work will be in the program itself. From narrative to documentary to experimental film, film serves as both a cultural force and an artistic medium. The Film Studies Program introduces students to the academic study of film from a variety of critical and disciplinary perspectives. As part of the liberal arts tradition, film is studied in relation to all the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Courses expose students to cultural, historical, formal, and theoretical analyses of films from a range of world cinematic traditions. In addition, students study the language of imagery, a language built on a vocabulary of light, sound, camera angles, editing patterns, set design, costume, and music. New media are also explored and opportunities to study film/video production are offered.

ADVANTAGES

The Five College Student Film and Video Festival is an annual event featuring original films and videos by Five College students. Founded in 1994, the festival has become an important venue for film students to meet, collaborate, and share their productions with their peers and with the college film community. Students from each of the Five Colleges organize the festival with the assistance of a Student Director from the host college and a faculty advisor. The festival, which is sponsored by the Five College Film Council, is a competitive event held at the end of the spring semester. Our Film curriculum is built around actual industry workflow, so you learn your way around a set while you’re in school. You’ll plan productions, write scripts, create storyboards, and learn how to shoot on a variety of cameras – 16mm, 35mm, HD, and more – and in a variety of styles. The Film School at the New York Film Academy was founded in 1992 on a belief that a top quality education in filmmaking should be accessible to anyone with the drive and ambition to make films. The Academy opened its doors in 1992 in Robert DeNiro‘s Tribeca Film Center. Since that time we have grown into our own facilities in Manhattan‘s Union Square and Soho; as well as, a degree granting campus in Los Angeles at Universal Studios. We hold One and Two-Year and short-term programs throughout the year in these locations; as well as, degree programs at the Universal Studios Campus. During the summer we offer our short-term programs at a number of additional locations, including Harvard University; Disney Studios- Florida; Paris, France; London, England; and Florence and Rome, Italy.

The New York Film Academy is working with a growing number of universities to allow students to earn bachelor’s degrees in conjunction with courses taken at the New York Film Academy.

Credits earned in any of our film school programs may be submitted to any college or university in the United States for transfer credit. All transcripts and college credits are processed and issued solely by the New York Film Academy’s academic headquarters at Universal Studios, California. No additional per credit fee is required.

Every university has its own credit transfer policy. New York Film Academy cannot guarantee that credits earned will be accepted. If possible, students should request the credit transfer policy from their school of choice before the transfer process commences. Accredited by the National Private School Alliance, Film Connection is not a Title IV School.
