DESCRIPTION

If you see yourself someday writing a Hollywood blockbuster or a breakthrough indie film… or collaborating with a team of writers on a sitcom or hour-long drama… If you’ve ever imagined yourself accepting an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay or an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, then Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts is an excellent place to pursue your passion and hone your skills.

Our intensive undergraduate screenwriting degree is designed specifically to help fledgling screenwriters like you develop your individual creativity as you explore the intricacies of story structure and character development. You’ll work one-on-one with an outstanding faculty of Hollywood screenwriters with many years of experience in both film and television — and many awards on their shelves. And you’ll learn to write in a variety of art forms — short film and feature-length, episodic television and mini-series.

ADVANTAGES

From sound stages to state-of-the-art classrooms, computer labs with every program needed for pre- and post-production, design and special effects to our 500-seat Folino Theater to showcase your end result or host an amazing event, this building is a living, breathing creative space open 24/7 for your use.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Faculty are ready with advice about classes and projects, staff will assist you with paperwork and equipment to get your films made, and the Dean is on hand to lead fascinating discussions with major filmmakers who come to visit. They are all here for the students first and are available to help with any issues you might have.

FINANCIAL AID

Since 1861, the university has been making it possible for students from all walks of life to enjoy the benefits of a Chapman University education. We are proud to be a part of our university’s rich heritage of service and dedication to others.

At the end of your four years, you’ll leave here with at least two finished scripts to share with the Hollywood insiders you’ve come to know through your time at Dodge.

DESCRIPTION

If you’re interested in the creative possibilities of the visual media, consider entering our bachelor of fine arts program. The film, photography, and visual arts program differs from the B.S. program in cinema and photography by adding coursework in the other fine arts. Rather than focusing on one specific medium, you’ll be encouraged to explore the whole spectrum of visual culture.

Beginning in your freshman year, you’ll take many of the same classes in photography and film production as cinema and photography majors (bring your own digital SLR camera and light meter), and you’ll spend as much time in the darkroom or at an editing station as they do. But you’ll also venture into the television studios for video production classes and trek over to the art studio for lessons in drawing.

ADVANTAGES

The Department of Cinema, Photography, and Media Arts boasts a faculty of nationally and internationally recognized artists, media makers, and scholars.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

You will receive grounding in required courses in media analysis and criticism. To round out your educational experience, you will choose from elective courses in related fields such as art and art history. But the real emphasis is on producing images — photographs, paintings, films, videos, and drawings.

FINANCIAL AID

Higher education is one of the best investments you can make for your future. The Office of Student Financial Services works in partnership with students and parents to help them realize their dream of a great Ithaca education.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are given to select entering undergraduate students of exceptional academic ability and/or talent, regardless of their financial need. The awards are in recognition of superior academic achievement with the expectation of continuing pursuit of academic excellence. All incoming students are automatically considered for President’s, Dean’s, and ALANA Scholarships; no special application is necessary. ALANA Scholarship recipients must be members of an underrepresented group.

CERTIFICATIONS

Ithaca College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association

SUMMARY

The B.F.A. program will test your ability to juggle projects, stay on deadline, and maintain your creative energies. The goal is to provide you with the skills and background you need to develop and express your creative vision, and develop career skills in multiple visual media.

DESCRIPTION

Students completing the two-year graduate program will earn an M.F.A. in Screenwriting and be prepared to place, sell, and/or produce their work in the film and television industry. The program is small yet vigorous and nurturing. Our motto: writers write.

By the time students leave the halls of the University, they will have completed three or four feature length screenplays, a television pilot, and several short screenplays. In addition, students will have a strong understanding of the film and television industry and what it takes to sell their work.

ADVANTAGES

Beyond learning the art and craft of screenwriting, students interested in gaining teaching experience will have the opportunity to apply for graduate assistant positions in which they will lead discussion groups with undergraduate, beginning screenwriters. These positions hold the opportunity for tuition remission.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Screenwriting students are also eligible to compete in the yearly ‘Fleder-Rosenberg’ short screenplay contest, which offers cash prizes for the best short scripts and a funded trip to Los Angeles for the grand prizewinners to have meetings with industry professionals.

FINANCIAL AID

The College of Communication’s financial aid resources include scholarship funds and graduate assistantships (teaching, research, administrative).

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarship awards are merit-based on academic promise and the availability of funds. Eligibility for some types of assistance is determined by documented financial need.

SUMMARY

Students in the screenwriting program have a fourfold requirement: to understand and practice the art of screenwriting; to learn the fundamentals of dramatic production; to understand different models of filmmaking and film history; and to comprehend the role of the storyteller and that of mythology in the dramatic tradition.

DESCRIPTION

The BFA program in filmmaking is open to students who wish to pursue program emphasis in the areas of animation, cinematography, directing, picture editing and sound design, producing, production design, or screenwriting. At the same time, the School expects students to have or to develop a strong base in the liberal arts and humanities, as well as the physical and social sciences, with additional intensive coursework in film history, aesthetics and criticism.

With this in mind, the School of Filmmaking does not offer a College Arts Diploma to any student who does not already possess a BA, BM, BS, or BFA degree.

ADVANTAGES

Instruction begins with basic immersion in storytelling, and explorations into character, conflict, setting, dialogue, emotional tone, stage directions and professional format. More advanced classes explore three-act structure, the value of rewriting, and genre writing – from classic genres such as the Western and detective thriller to contemporary independent film material. Extensive work shopping is done both on screenplays for school productions, particularly in the first and second years, and feature-length screenplays, two of which must be written in years three and four.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

The second-year screenwriting curriculum gives the student the opportunity to further develop his/her screenwriting skills. In addition to reinforcing the concepts introduced in Year One – developing character, conflict, setting, dialogue, controlling idea in short scripts – there will be an introduction of traditional three-act structure. Emphasis will be placed on developing and outlining feature ideas in three acts, as well as writing Act One of a feature screenplay.

FINANCIAL AID

Focusing on narrative storytelling in an environment designed to simulate the world of the professional screenwriter, Screenwriting Fellows find their unique voices, while learning the essence of working as part of a creative team.

The heart of the Screenwriting program lies in the relationship between the Fellow and the exemplary faculty who serve as teachers and mentors, guiding and supporting each writer’s development in an intimate workshop setting.
ADVANTAGES

The Conservatory’s program is highly structured, involving continuous production work during which Fellows experience both the creative and physical collaborative process. Fellows pursue their chosen discipline’s professional curriculum as well as deepen their overall understanding through participation in frequent Master Seminars with world-renowned visiting filmmakers. In 2007-2008, the list of visiting filmmakers included: Tamara Jenkins, Sean Penn, Jason Reitman, Janusz Kaminski, Warren Beatty, Stacey Snider, Mark Waters, Uta Briesewitz, and Matthew Libatique.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Located in the hills overlooking Hollywood, AFI’s wooded and intimate eight-acre Campus is in close proximity to the heart of the professional filmmaking community, with easy access to studios, networks and numerous post-production facilities.

FINANCIAL AID

The AFI Conservatory’s Financial Aid Office is committed to assisting both prospective and current Fellows with the knowledge and understanding necessary to finance this unique education.

SCHOLARSHIPS

While limited AFI scholarships are available, applicants are encouraged to research scholarship funding from non-AFI sources or local foundations in your area.

CERTIFICATIONS

The AFI Conservatory is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges

SUMMARY

At the world-renowned AFI Conservatory, a dedicated group of working professionals from the film and television communities serve as mentors in a hands-on, production-based environment nurturing the talents of tomorrow’s storytellers.

It all starts with imagination, ideas and the script. Creative producers and screenwriters learn to analyze and write screenplays by understanding character, structure and narrative story elements, then assemble and collaborate with key creative artists to form a combined vision through a project’s development, pre-production, production and post-production.

Filmmakers will perfect both the creative and business aspects of filmmaking by enhancing and developing artistic proficiency and judgment and becoming immersed in a solid background of the entertainment industry.

ADVANTAGES

The CFS main facility is a 25,000 square foot building. The main studio, a 4000 square foot sound stage, includes three Thompson BTS digital cameras with Canon studio lenses, Teleprompters, and Vinten MK V heads with tern type pedestals. At one end of the studio a cyclorama is available for green screen photography. A $300,000 Desisti lighting grid controlled by an INSight Lighting Board hangs over the entire stage.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Our Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Regis University creates a seamless, integrated program offered entirely at Colorado Film School facilities. This unique program creates an affordable, accredited, and focused professional degree program. We offer five distinct emphases for students wanting to work in film and media – the language of the global marketplace.

FINANCIAL AID

A variety of financial aid options are available..

SCHOLARSHIPS

While limited AFI scholarships are available, applicants are encouraged to research scholarship funding from non-AFI sources or local foundations in your area.

CERTIFICATIONS

In the creation of the Regis BFA, full compliance with NASAD accreditation requirements was built into the curriculum. (NASAD, or National Association of Schools of Art and Design, is the most widely recognized accrediting body for Film Schools) As NASAD requires programs to be in operation at least one year before it evaluates a program, NASAD accreditation is planned for the 2010-11 school year.

DESCRIPTION
The Film School at the New York Film Academy was founded in 1992 on a belief that a top quality education in filmmaking should be accessible to anyone with the drive and ambition to make films. The Academy opened its doors in 1992 in Robert DeNiro‘s Tribeca Film Center. Since that time we have grown into our own facilities in Manhattan‘s Union Square and Soho; as well as, a degree granting campus in Los Angeles at Universal Studios. We hold One and Two-Year and short-term programs throughout the year in these locations; as well as, degree programs at the Universal Studios Campus. During the summer we offer our short-term programs at a number of additional locations, including Harvard University; Disney Studios- Florida; Paris, France; London, England; and Florence and Rome, Italy.

Click here to view the embedded video.

New York Film Academy degree programs are offered at our Los Angeles Campus at Universal Studios. Qualified students have the option of attending the New York Film Academy in New York City in a one-year non-degree program and requesting that their course work be accepted for advanced standing in a degree program at the Los Angeles campus. In order to do so, students must apply and be accepted to the degree program in Los Angeles.

ADVANTAGES
The many different programs of the New York Film Academy share a philosophy that balances in-class instruction by award-winning filmmakers with an intense exploration of the medium through practical, hands-on work. For us, learning by doing means requiring each student to make a series of short films. This takes them through the entire filmmaking process.

For many students, the time and tuition required to complete a four-year university program are impractical burdens. We believe that students provide the talent; we provide the instruction, equipment and structure. It is the students‘ drive and creative ability that carries them forward.

THINGS TO CONSIDER
Orson Welles once stated, “If you give me three days, I can show you the ABCs of film.” The New York Film Academy gives our students a bit more time – our programs run from four, six, and eight weeks to one or two years. Our goal is to give students the basic tools and practical hands-on experience needed for filmmaking. This lays a solid foundation for future work. The students themselves will apply what they have learned to whichever path they take.

FINANCIAL AID
The New York Film Academy has a variety of options for funding your studies. Our Financial Aid Director, Brian Koplow, will assist you in assessing your needs and refer you to the best funding source. You can reach him at financialaid@nyfa.edu.

SCHOLARSHIPS
BRETT RATNER $15,000 Tuition Grant

CERTIFICATIONS
The New York Film Academy is accredited by the National
Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) with campuses in New York City and at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California. NASAD is the only accrediting body for visual art programs recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

SUMMARY
Each year hundreds of students of all occupations, races, ethnicities, and of a wide range of ages from around the world benefit from the extraordinary education offered at the New York Film Academy. Today, the New York Film Academy is considered one of the most prominent fixtures of film education in the world.

DESCRIPTION
Film Connection offers courses in Directing, Producing, Writing, Editing and General Production for the film and television industries. Accredited by the National Private School Alliance, Film Connection is not a Title IV School. There is a curriculum that is followed so that all students learn how movies and TV shows are really made. Business skills are part of the curriculum.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Film Connection features the mentor apprentice method of teaching students the necessary skills by having them work one-on-one with their mentor on real world projects. Film Connection enjoys working relationships with mentors in film and television directing, producing, writing, editing and general production in most major U.S. and Canadian cities.

ADVANTAGES
Choice of locations, real world experience, one-on-one training and attractive pricing are the main advantages of Film Connection, and that’s saying a lot. No other film school offers as many locations for the student. Not having to relocate, or quit a day job, can offer significant financial advantages to the prospective student. Financially, the low tuition price is also a factor.

Perhaps the biggest advantage held by the Film Connection is the real world experience. Course instruction takes place on film sets and studios, or inside production houses and edit bays under the guidance of a working professional who serves as the student’s private tutor. This provides the student with tremendous opportunities to learn a wealth of practical knowledge and meet a host of professional contacts in a short period of time.

THINGS TO CONSIDER
No Title IV College Degree. In the film and television industries, the closer you are to the production side of things, the less a degree means. Learning in a mentor/apprentice environment is a lot like learning to swim by being tossed in the deep end of the swimming pool with no warning. For some, it serves as a catalyst and provides the ultimate learning and network situation…others can find they are simply in over their heads.

FINANCIAL AID
Film Connection offers several internal payment plans that vary in the amount of down payment and monthly payments. Sallie Mae student loans are also available to qualified applicants. The Film Connection Financial Aid Department will help you with your Sallie Mae application at no extra charge.

SUMMARY
Film Connection works best for the person who is a self-starter. It is tailor made for those with an entrepreneurial makeup. If you have a burning desire to make your own film, tell your own story, but don’t know where to start, the Film Connection is for you.
