Overview
Restaurant and hotel managers are experts in hard work and multi-tasking, able to oversee a staff of people and see to the needs of individual guests while creating a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all involved. They must be both servants and leaders, able both to delegate and to exert authority while making sure the customers are completely satisfied. They must be able to think on their feet, solving problems on the fly and always thinking and planning ahead. If you are both detail-oriented and a people person, you might thoroughly enjoy a career in hospitality management.
In studying restaurant and/or hotel management, you’ll learn the important skills of budgeting, training others, and management techniques. You’ll learn how to anticipate customers’ needs, and how to facilitate the meeting of those needs. You’ll learn how to turn your restaurant or hotel into a well-oiled machine, something that can run without you when necessary. And you’ll learn the people skills that are so necessary to a successful business. Best of all, you’ll lay a great foundation for your life that might even take you beyond managing that hotel into actually owning it. Who knows—you might be the next Donald Trump!
