Overview

In its most basic sense, “media” refers to any/all avenues used to communicate or convey a message. Media can encompass journalism, television/radio broadcasting, graphic design, social networks, web design, photography, and a nearly infinite number of other avenues. When you train for a career in media, at the heart of it, you’re training in the art of communication.

As a student of media, you’ll learn many avenues of communication, especially in the graphic arts—and you’ll learn how to any number of these channels to communicate effectively to your desired audience. You’ll learn about text, color and multimedia, and how these elements are best combined to communicate. You’ll also learn the particular words, phrases and even color combinations that are best suited for the message you’re trying to send. Media is such a broad field that you’ll likely want to specialize in some form of it; but whatever form you choose, you will learn how to become a skilled communicator, using your creativity to convey messages to the world.

Through a combination of hands-on exercises, lectures and projects, you’ll be introduced to real-world applications with emphasis on JavaScript, MySQL, XML, AJAX and object-oriented programming techniques on projects of increasing complexity. You’ll learn how to build rich Internet applications, manage social content for the Web and generate a portfolio demonstrating your new skills in web platform development, integration and deployment. Upon completion—and with a substantial résumé and the latest web development programming skills— you will have the knowledge and experience to enter the workforce with confidence.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

This intensive program focuses on client side programming with HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and server side programming using PHP scripting and Structured Query Language (SQL) databases in deploying rich media sites using various Flash and open source content management toolsets.

FINANCIAL AID

The Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts offers a no interest deferred tuition plan to allow payment in four equal installments. Twenty-five percent of the tuition is due at registration, with remaining payments due at prearranged intervals during the program. A $300.00 processing fee will be assessed upon registration.

  • Tuition Costs Are Rising At Unprecedented Rates

    The headline says it all.  Tuition costs have escalated to the point where students are demonstrating.  In fact, it's not unusual for a student to graduate from school hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

    This makes it imperative to spend some time choosing the right school to help you achieve your goals.  Sadly, in this age of hyper-inflated tuition costs, a college degree does not guarantee a job, much less a career.

    One strategy that is often overlooked when choosing a school is to talk to people who are successful in the career you want to pursue.  If you don't know anyone in your chosen field, you can often find much of this valuable information online.

    The more entrepreneurial individual might go so far as to enroll in the "University of Hard Knocks" and just go for it.  The reasoning is simple: he can start his career behind the wheel of a Bentley, instead of owing his college what a Bentley costs by the time he graduates.

    We're by no means advocating dropping out of school, or not pursuing an education.  However, we are advocating that you look before you leap.
