DESCRIPTION

While contributing to the cultural enrichment of the University community, the Art Department promotes the creative development of students whose interests and talents lead them toward careers in the visual arts, fashion design and fashion merchandising. The art and fashion curricula are designed to encourage intellectual and perceptual growth as well as to develop marketable skills.

Students may select from programs in general studio art or advertising design in the visual arts. Fashion students follow courses of study that concentrate in either fashion design or fashion merchandising. In addition to offering degree programs, The Art Department also sponsors visiting artists, designers, art directors and fashion industry professionals.

ADVANTAGES

Student activities provide students with educational experiences beyond the classroom. Through clubs and organizations as well as cultural, social, recreational, and leadership programming, student life programs and student activities make available to students opportunities for leadership development and self-realization.

SUMMARY

The mission of the Art Department is threefold. Elements of the mission include: 1) to prepare students for career-oriented experiences; 2) to foster a sensibility for the varieties of human expression in the visual arts; and 3) to be specifically concerned with visual expression in African-American culture.

  • Tuition Costs Are Rising At Unprecedented Rates

    The headline says it all.  Tuition costs have escalated to the point where students are demonstrating.  In fact, it's not unusual for a student to graduate from school hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

    This makes it imperative to spend some time choosing the right school to help you achieve your goals.  Sadly, in this age of hyper-inflated tuition costs, a college degree does not guarantee a job, much less a career.

    One strategy that is often overlooked when choosing a school is to talk to people who are successful in the career you want to pursue.  If you don't know anyone in your chosen field, you can often find much of this valuable information online.

    The more entrepreneurial individual might go so far as to enroll in the "University of Hard Knocks" and just go for it.  The reasoning is simple: he can start his career behind the wheel of a Bentley, instead of owing his college what a Bentley costs by the time he graduates.

    We're by no means advocating dropping out of school, or not pursuing an education.  However, we are advocating that you look before you leap.
