DESCRIPTION

Dance at Mount Holyoke offers a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing technical training, creative experimentation, and critical/theoretical understanding. The department is renowned for extensive studio offerings in ballet technique, modern technique, and repertory/performance, as well as its regular offerings in West African Dance and rotating offerings in tap, jazz, contact improvisation, and other forms. Theory courses range from scientific foundations of dance to twentieth-century dance history to choreography and dance aesthetics. The department’s classes are augmented by the more than 100 theory and studio courses offered annually through the Five College Dance Department.

Both majors and minors have opportunities to train with guest artists, as well as to develop and perform new work. Each academic year concludes with a showcase performance featuring both students and faculty.

ADVANTAGES

The Five College Dance Department is one of the largest dance departments in the country and combines the programs of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The faculty meets to coordinate curricula, course scheduling, performances, and other services. The Five College Dance Department supports a variety of philosophical approaches to dance and provides an opportunity for students to experience a wide spectrum of performance styles and techniques. Course offerings are coordinated among the campuses to facilitate registration, interchange, and student travel; students may take a dance course on any of the five campuses and receive credit at their home institution.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Beginning this fall, the MHC Dance Department will have its own wing in the renovated Kendall complex, including two spacious new dance studios and a state-of-the-art Studio Theater, with comfortable new and expanded seating, and a 20×50 skylight.

  • Tuition Costs Are Rising At Unprecedented Rates

    http://www.schoolsforme.net

The headline says it all.  Tuition costs have escalated to the point where students are demonstrating.  In fact, it's not unusual for a student to graduate from school hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

This makes it imperative to spend some time choosing the right school to help you achieve your goals.  Sadly, in this age of hyper-inflated tuition costs, a college degree does not guarantee a job, much less a career.

One strategy that is often overlooked when choosing a school is to talk to people who are successful in the career you want to pursue.  If you don't know anyone in your chosen field, you can often find much of this valuable information online.

The more entrepreneurial individual might go so far as to enroll in the "University of Hard Knocks" and just go for it.  The reasoning is simple: he can start his career behind the wheel of a Bentley, instead of owing his college what a Bentley costs by the time he graduates.

We're by no means advocating dropping out of school, or not pursuing an education.  However, we are advocating that you look before you leap.

The MBA in the corner office, fresh out of business school with a six-figure paycheck, is a standard trope of Corporate America. Every incoming student has heard rags-to-riches tales of that gilded certification leading to giant paychecks and even bigger bonuses. But how often do these MBA fairy tales actually come true? According to new research: not as often as you think.Read more »
